“And you shall count seven sabbaths of years for yourself, seven times seven years … Then you shall cause the trumpet of the Jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement you shall make the trumpet to sound throughout all your land. And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee for you; and each of you shall return to his possession, and each of you shall return to his family…
According to the number of years after the Jubilee you shall buy from your neighbor, and according to the number of years of crops he shall sell to you. According to the multitude of years you shall increase its price, and according to the fewer number of years you shall diminish its price; for he sells to you according to the number of the years of the crops. Therefore you shall not oppress one another, but you shall fear your God; for I am the LORD your God.” (Leviticus 25.)
Every 50 years, the nation of Israel was commanded to perform a “GREAT RESET.” That reset was meant to trigger massive and irreversible societal, economic, and financial changes that would touch the life of EVERY citizen of Israel. A concise formula of the “Jubilee Laws” meant that at each 50 years’ cycle, EVERY SLAVE was set free; EVERY DEBT was cancelled; and ALL LANDS were handed back to their original tribal owners. This was a total nationwide socio-economic reset.
To our knowledge, Israel never had the faith to fulfill this commandment to its fullest, and we understand the reasons why. Can you imagine such cyclical radical shifts performed in our world today? Banks would collapse. The credit system would fall apart. Real-estate markets would lose their value, and massive amounts of people would be reintroduced overnight into a free economy. Israel never had the faith or trust in God to be so cast on Him, and neither would any other people group upon this earth.
Nevertheless, this is God’s vision for us. As each 50-year cycle would begin, every oppressed, impoverished, or enslaved person in Israel was handed the opportunity to be set free from their (or their family’s) bad decisions and consequences. Every 50 years, we were offered a chance for a clean slate and a new shot at life, free from generational flaws and past iniquities.
As it is written, “What do you mean when you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge?’… The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself… Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, says the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin. Cast away from you all the transgressions which you have committed, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies, says the Lord GOD. Therefore turn and live!” (Ezekiel 18).
THE FINAL & ULTIMATE JUBILEE
This was what the Lord Yeshua said in His dramatic “introductory message” at the Nazareth synagogue. He opened the scroll and quoted Isaiah’s most potent Messianic prophecy, saying, “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable (most probably a Jubilee) year of the LORD…” (Luke 4).
Quoting Isaiah 61, Yeshua personally proclaimed the coming of the “acceptable, or favorable, year of the Lord,” heralding the Messianic era of salvation and divine favor. In His short and explosive statement the Lord declared His mission, His purpose, and His credentials. Only Israel’s prophets could proclaim God’s good tidings to the people. Only Israel’s priests could heal body and soul. And only Israel’s kings could declare the official start of the Year of Jubilee. Right there, in His humble neighborhood synagogue where everyone personally knew him, the Lord declared that:
1 – The Spirit of YHWH is upon Him.
2 – That He is anointed to serve as Israel’s ultimate prophet, priest, and king.
Later on that very day they tried to kill him, but it was not yet His time. God made time, and the year of the Lord’s death and resurrection was most probably a biblical Jubilee year, thus becoming the GREATEST RESET of all.
Every child of God who is born again is invited to share, by faith, in this Jubilee provision. While journeying through this fallen world and struggling in our mortal body of flesh, we are invited to embrace, by the Spirit, that freedom from oppression and generational burdens that the Lord earned for us by His blood and proclaimed in the Nazareth synagogue.
Surely this is not an easy battle, which is the reason the Bible calls it “the good fight of faith” (I-Timothy 6). The original Greek word translated “good” in Paul’s writing is “kalos,” meaning “beautiful.” From God’s perspective, your struggle of faith today is indeed beautiful.
